Choose by fit first, then compare the extras

AirPods 5 keep the open-fit design and add ANC at a much lower U.S. launch price. AirPods Pro 3 seal in the ear with silicone tips, carry Apple’s stronger ANC claim, last longer per charge with ANC, and add heart-rate sensing during workouts. If silicone tips suit you and noise cancellation is the priority, compare Pro 3. If you dislike in-ear tips or want to spend less, start with AirPods 5; choose the $149 wireless-case version only if its charging and battery extras matter to you.

Manufacturer-specification comparison checked 3 October 2026, not a hands-on fit, sound-quality or noise-cancellation test. Prices are U.S. launch prices, not current Amazon prices. Apple’s ANC figures are manufacturer claims from specified test setups, not our independent head-to-head measurements.

AirPods 5 keeps the open fit and adds ANC

The cheaper option is not simply a cut-down Pro. AirPods 5 retain the open-fit shape, so there are no silicone tips sealing the ear canal. Apple adds Active Noise Cancellation to that design and says the 2026 model removes up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC in its stated test. That addresses an old trade-off for people who prefer the fit of standard AirPods but still want some noise control.

There are two configurations to check. The $129 model has a USB-C charging case. The $149 version adds a wireless charging case that works with Apple Watch and Qi chargers, a case speaker for Find My, on-stem volume swipe, and a higher Apple-rated ANC battery life. Those are U.S. launch prices; compare the selected listing and live checkout price before buying.

Pro 3 is the stronger choice for a sealed fit and maximum isolation

AirPods Pro 3 use silicone tips in five sizes, including the new XXS size. That seal is the meaningful distinction if you need a more isolated listening experience. Apple rates them for up to eight hours with ANC on one charge and up to 24 hours with the case, compared with up to four hours and 20 hours for base AirPods 5. The wireless-case AirPods 5 version is rated at five and 22 hours respectively.

Apple’s current model comparison says Pro 3 provides up to three times more ANC than AirPods 5. Treat that as a published claim, not an independent real-world ranking: noise reduction depends on fit, ear tips, environment and settings, and the two designs do not seal the ear in the same way. If ANC matters most, the Pro model is the safer specification-based pick; try its fit before you decide if possible.

Workout features make the price gap more specific

AirPods Pro 3 add a heart-rate sensor for supported workouts in the iPhone Fitness app and can track more than 50 workout types, according to Apple. That gives the $249 model a clearer use case if you want workout heart-rate data from the earbuds themselves. It does not make AirPods Pro 3 a medical monitor, and it does not replace an Apple Watch for people who want a wrist-worn display and broader all-day tracking.

AirPods 5 still include dust, sweat and water resistance (IP57, per Apple), but the current comparison does not list that workout heart-rate sensor for them. If you mostly listen at a desk, commute or take calls, you may not get enough value from the Pro-only workout feature to justify the difference.

Live Translation and Siri AI have regional limits

Both families support Apple’s current Live Translation and Siri AI feature set when paired with compatible Apple devices and software, but Apple says language and region availability varies. Its launch information says Siri AI will not initially be available in the EU on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS. If those are your main reason to buy, check Apple’s current availability list for your country and preferred language first; a headline feature may not be active where you live.

A quick decision guide

Choose AirPods 5 if you prefer an open fit, dislike silicone tips, want ANC at a lower launch price, or mainly need everyday Apple earbuds. The base version is the value option; pay extra for the wireless-case model only if wireless charging, Find My case speaker, volume swipe or its extra battery rating are useful to you.

Choose AirPods Pro 3 if the in-ear seal feels comfortable, stronger ANC is the priority, longer playback between charges matters, or you want the added workout heart-rate sensor. The specs cannot tell you which earbud will stay comfortable in your ears for hours.
