Apple Watch Ultra 4 vs Series 12: is the $400 jump worth it?
Both watches bring Apple’s new health-sensing system and S11 chip. Ultra 4 earns its premium through longer battery ratings, tougher hardware and longer GPS workout modes. For most everyday routines, Series 12 covers the same headline health features at half the launch price.

What the $400 difference buys
At launch, Ultra 4 starts at $799 and Series 12 at $399. Ultra 4 uses a 49 mm Grade 5 titanium case, a larger display rated up to 3,000 nits and the controls and construction Apple designed for demanding outdoor use. Series 12 comes in two case sizes and aluminum or titanium; it wears closer to a conventional everyday smartwatch.
The battery ratings make the clearest practical distinction: Apple gives Ultra 4 up to 50 hours in normal use and up to 84 in Low Power Mode. Series 12 is rated for up to 24 and 38 hours. Those are manufacturer estimates rather than a direct real-world test, but the gap can matter if you track sleep, spend long days away from a charger or go on multi-day trips.
For GPS-heavy exercise, the Ultra has separate Extended Workout modes. Apple rates it for up to 25 hours of outdoor workout tracking in Extended Workout and up to 45 hours in Max Extended Workout. The latter uses a specific lower-power configuration while continuing GPS readings every second; it is not the expected runtime for every workout setup.
The headline health features are shared
Series 12 is not the stripped-down option for health tracking. Apple lists its new Health Sensing System and S11 chip, with higher-frequency heart-rate and HRV measurements plus readiness. Those are also central Ultra 4 features. Apple says Ultra 4 provides the most accurate heart-rate sensing in a wearable, based on its cited study; we have not independently evaluated that claim.
If readiness, more frequent HRV or a new chip is your reason to upgrade, Series 12 gets you into the new system for less. Consider Ultra 4 when the physical package and endurance features are useful too.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Ultra 4 if you routinely do long outdoor sessions, need a much longer battery window, prefer the 49 mm rugged titanium design or value the dedicated outdoor workout modes.
- Choose Series 12 if you want the new health sensing and readiness for daily life, sleep and regular workouts without paying for Ultra endurance or its larger case.
- Try the fit in person if you are unsure about size. The 49 mm Ultra has a substantial wrist presence, and its weight is part of the tradeoff.
