ASUS PA27JCV vs BenQ PD2730S: which 5K monitor makes sense for your Mac?

Compare ASUS PA27JCV and BenQ PD2730S for a Mac: 5K scaling, USB-C versus Thunderbolt, KVM, charging and what is worth paying extra for.

Choose the connection plan first

For one 5K screen, shortlist the ASUS if its delivered price is lower and USB-C covers your needs. The BenQ is worth comparing when you want a Thunderbolt output for a second display or its external control puck. Both have KVM switching; neither wins this comparison simply by having more pixels.

This is a specification-based buying guide, not a hands-on review. Manufacturer references and official images were checked on 10 October 2026. Exact Amazon.com model listings were verified on 9 October; seller, stock and delivered prices can change. The recommendations below are my interpretation of the documented features.

The same 5K workspace, without guessing from the connector

Both panels have 5120 × 2880 pixels. At exact 2× scaling, that corresponds to a 2560 × 1440 logical workspace: divide each dimension by two. Choosing one of these over the other does not add desktop area at that setting. The high-PPI guide explains the difference between pixel density and workspace.

Both are 60Hz models. If smooth scrolling or high-refresh gaming is your main reason for replacing a screen, widening the shortlist is more useful than choosing between these two. Check that your Mac and selected connection support the full resolution; an HDMI socket by itself does not establish the supported Mac mode.

One monitor: USB-C may already do everything you need

The ASUS specifications list USB-C video with up to 96W Power Delivery, alongside DisplayPort and HDMI. For a compatible MacBook, a video-capable USB-C connection can carry the picture and charge the laptop. For a Mac mini, laptop charging is not a buying advantage: the mini uses its own power connection.

I would start by comparing the final prices for a single-screen desk. If the ASUS is substantially cheaper, ask which BenQ feature you would actually use before paying the difference. If the prices are close, the BenQ’s extra connection and control options deserve more attention. This is a buying judgement, not a measured image-quality ranking.

Two monitors: the BenQ adds a Thunderbolt route

The BenQ specifications list a Thunderbolt 4 input and a separate Thunderbolt output. Its overview advertises dual 5K/60Hz daisy chaining, with Mac support restrictions. Confirm your exact Mac chip and the second monitor before buying for that feature; a Thunderbolt port is not a universal guarantee for every pair of displays.

The ASUS port list does not include a Thunderbolt output. Plan a separate Mac video connection for a second screen rather than expecting its USB hub to drive another independent desktop. Our Mac mini dual-monitor guide covers separate rear connections and why some dual-HDMI hubs mirror on macOS.

A Mac and a PC: both offer KVM

KVM is not an exclusive BenQ advantage here. ASUS documents Auto KVM on the PA27JCV. Its setup explanation uses USB-C for one computer; the other needs HDMI or DisplayPort for video plus a separate USB upstream connection for the keyboard and mouse. Plugging in a second video cable alone does not complete that setup.

BenQ also lists KVM. Its included Hotkey Puck G3 provides another way to control the monitor. If you switch systems often, consider how you want to select inputs and controls. I have not compared their switching speed, wake-from-sleep behaviour or software reliability.

Coating and colour: specs cannot settle personal preference

ASUS calls its surface AGLR; BenQ calls its surface Nano Matte. Both target reflection reduction, but those names are not a side-by-side test. I would check a display in person or choose a seller with suitable return terms if coating texture is a major concern.

Published gamut coverage is useful context, not enough to declare a winner in actual colour accuracy. This guide contains no independent measurements of either unit’s uniformity, calibration or reflections. For colour-critical work, judge the complete workflow and calibration requirements rather than a one-point coverage difference.

Compare what you will actually pay

ASUS’s October 2024 announcement set a $799 US MSRP. That is a historical reference, not today’s Amazon price. I could not verify a current BenQ direct-store price from its location-limited checkout page, so this comparison does not claim a fixed live price gap.

Open both exact model listings and compare the delivered totals: same country, new or used condition, seller, warranty and return terms. Include any cable or arm you need. A discounted monitor is only the better buy if it supports the setup you intended to build.

My shortlist: one screen and a meaningful saving, ASUS; a confirmed compatible Thunderbolt chain or a strong preference for the puck, BenQ. If neither solves your requirements, use the 5K/6K monitor finder to compare more models.

Common questions

Is the ASUS PA27JCV a Thunderbolt monitor?

Its published ports use USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode, not a Thunderbolt input/output hub.

Do both monitors have KVM?

Yes. ASUS lists Auto KVM and BenQ lists KVM. The second computer also needs the required USB data connection, not just video.

Which has more workspace at exact 2× scaling?

Neither. Both are 5120 × 2880 panels, corresponding to 2560 × 1440 logical pixels at exact 2× scaling.
