iPhone / case-on charging test
Do I need to remove my PITAKA case for wireless charging?
My iPhone 17 Pro charging readings with a PITAKA case and without it, using the ESR CryoBoost fan. What changed, and what these two runs cannot tell us.
By WannabeShepherd ·

I am happy to leave mine on
The case-on and case-free readings were close in my two runs. At 30 minutes, my iPhone 17 Pro showed 57% with the PITAKA case and 59% without it. That was enough for me to keep the convenience of charging with the case on. It is not a promise for every case or charger.
One case-on run and one case-free run, both with an iPhone 17 Pro and ESR CryoBoost fan enabled, starting at 0%. Room temperature, starting battery temperature and background activity were not documented or controlled. Charging wattage was not measured. PITAKA supplied the review cases, and ESR supplied the charger. The Amazon buttons are affiliate links; as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

| Elapsed time | PITAKA case fitted | No case |

| 20 minutes | 38% | 39% |
| 30 minutes | 57% | 59% |
What I compared
I normally charge the phone with its case on, so I wanted to see what removing it changed. I used the same ESR CryoBoost charger with the fan switched on and recorded the battery percentage during separate case-on and case-free runs.
This is a comparison of my setup, not a ranking of case materials or a test of the charger’s advertised maximum wattage. The full PITAKA review covers comfort, magnets, fingerprints and the case itself.
The early readings were close
The case-on run was two percentage points ahead at ten minutes. The case-free run was one point ahead at twenty minutes and two points ahead at thirty. I did not see a large gap in those directly comparable readings.
My reported times to 80% were 55 minutes with the case and 51 minutes without it. The case-free run has a directly recorded 80% reading at 51 minutes. The case-on run has readings at 10, 20, 30 and 60 minutes; an exact 80% checkpoint was not captured. I would not treat the four-minute difference as a precise measurement of what the case alone costs.
A small difference is not proof of no effect
These were individual runs, not repeated trials under matched conditions. Phone temperature and background activity could also change the result. The table shows the readings I recorded; it does not isolate the case as the only variable.
For the fan-on, fan-off and USB-C results, see the ESR CryoBoost follow-up. Keeping those comparisons separate matters: taking off a case and switching on a cooling fan are different changes.
What I would check before buying
Confirm the case is listed for your exact phone, that it supports your magnetic charger, and that the phone sits securely on the charging surface. My results do not cover a wallet attached to the case, another case thickness or a different charger.
The Burgundy Amazon button here opens an iPhone 18 Pro Argyle listing. My own samples fitted my iPhone 17 Pro well, but PITAKA does not guarantee full cross-generation compatibility. Read the specific fit check and select the variant intended for your phone before ordering.
I would not buy a new case just to chase the small difference between these two runs. If your current setup charges reliably and fits your routine, start there.

Common questions
Do I need to remove my PITAKA case to charge wirelessly?
I was happy to leave mine on with my iPhone 17 Pro and ESR CryoBoost. The directly recorded ten-, twenty- and thirty-minute readings were close with and without the case. This applies to my setup, not every PITAKA case or charger.
Does a PITAKA case slow MagSafe charging?
At thirty minutes, my phone showed 57% with the case and 59% without it. These were separate single runs without controlled starting temperature or background activity, so they cannot establish how much the case alone affects charging speed.
Was the ESR CryoBoost fan on in both runs?
Yes. Both the case-on and case-free runs used the ESR CryoBoost fan enabled. The separate ESR follow-up covers fan-on, fan-off and USB-C charging.
Does this test cover a magnetic wallet or every iPhone model?
No. It compares my iPhone 17 Pro with a PITAKA case fitted and without a case. It does not establish performance with an attached wallet, other case lines or other phones.
