Apple Watch Ultra 4 vs Ultra 3: should you upgrade?

Apple kept the U.S. launch price at $799. The meaningful changes are longer battery ratings, a new health-sensing system and more headroom for long outdoor workouts. Whether those changes justify replacing a working Ultra 3 depends on how close its battery gets to your actual limit.

This compares Apple's published launch claims and specifications. It is not a hands-on review or independent battery test. Battery life varies with settings, signal, workout mode, fit and use.

The upgrade is about endurance, not a new price tier

Ultra 4 keeps the same $799 U.S. starting price Ultra 3 had at launch. That makes the buying decision less about paying a new premium and more about availability: Ultra 3 listings can be discounted, renewed or sold by third parties, while Ultra 4 is the current generation. Compare the exact condition and seller before treating a search-result price as like-for-like.

Apple's everyday battery estimate rises from up to 42 hours on Ultra 3 to up to 50 on Ultra 4. Low Power Mode goes from 72 to 84 hours. For full-GPS outdoor sessions, Apple's stated figure moves from 20 hours on Ultra 3 to 25 hours in Ultra 4 Extended Workout mode. These are useful margins if your long days, races or multi-day trips already push the older watch to its limits; they do not promise those runtimes in every configuration.

Ultra 4 also has a Max Extended Workout mode rated up to 45 hours, but that is a separate reduced-feature mode: Apple says it turns off alerts and splits and leaves some metrics unavailable. Treat it as extra GPS-tracking headroom, not as a like-for-like 45-hour version of the full heart-rate workout.

Readiness and sensing are the other main change

Ultra 3 already added satellite safety and messaging, 5G, sleep score and hypertension notifications. Those are not Ultra 4-only reasons to upgrade. Ultra 4 introduces Apple's Health Sensing System with new optical and electrical heart sensors, higher-frequency heart-rate and HRV readings, and readiness, a 0–10 daily score based on recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep score. Apple makes the accuracy claims; we have not independently tested sensor performance.

If you mainly use Ultra 3 for notifications, occasional workouts, navigation and its existing safety features, the new score may not change your routine. If you track training load and recovery closely, the higher-frequency measurements and readiness summary may be more relevant.

Who should keep Ultra 3, and who should move to Ultra 4?

  • Keep Ultra 3 if it lasts through your day and your normal workouts, and you do not need readiness or the new sensing system.
  • Consider Ultra 4 if your Ultra 3 regularly runs short on long outings, you need the extra GPS workout margin, or you will use readiness and higher-frequency health trends.
  • Compare current Ultra 3 listings carefully if shopping for a first Ultra. Condition, band, seller, warranty region and return terms can matter as much as the price.
  • Check fit in person if this is your first Ultra. The 49 mm case is substantial, and neither generation is a small everyday watch.

Frequently asked questions

Should I upgrade from Apple Watch Ultra 3 to Ultra 4?

Consider it if you need more battery headroom, long GPS tracking or the new readiness and health-sensing features. If Ultra 3 already lasts through your real routine, its published specifications remain capable.

Is Ultra 4 more expensive than Ultra 3?

Both had a U.S. launch price of $799. Today's Ultra 3 prices vary by stock, condition and seller, so compare equivalent configurations.

How much longer does Ultra 4 last during outdoor workouts?

Apple rates Ultra 4 Extended Workout at up to 25 hours with full GPS and heart-rate readings, versus Ultra 3's announced up-to-20-hour figure. Apple describes the Ultra 4 result as 25 percent more; real-world results vary.

Does Ultra 3 already have satellite connectivity?

Yes. Apple introduced satellite communications with Ultra 3, along with 5G, sleep score and hypertension notifications. These are not new Ultra 4 additions.

Has WannabeShepherd tested the two watches?

No. This is based on Apple's announcements and technical specifications, not a hands-on or independent battery test.
