iPhone ProRes to SSD: match the drive, cable and recording mode
Planning external ProRes on an iPhone? Match the exact phone and recording mode to the SSD, cable, format and power requirements before buying.
By WannabeShepherd ·

Choose the recording mode before the SSD
For a specifically documented iPhone 15, 16 or 17 Pro/Pro Max 4K60 ProRes setup, SanDisk lists the Creator Phone SSD as compatible. The 1TB Amazon listing matches the SDSSDE62C-1T00-G25 model. That does not certify the same drive for 4K120, RAW or iPhone 18 Pro. Check the cable’s data rating and your chosen app before recording; buy a replacement cable only if the supplied one is not documented for USB 3 at 10 Gbit/s.
Specification-based guide checked 15 October 2026. I have not tested these drives, cables, hubs or recording combinations. Apple’s phone-mode capability, SanDisk’s model-specific compatibility table and an advertised peak drive speed are separate kinds of evidence. Amazon links are paid affiliate links.

| Recording plan | What current documentation says | What to buy or verify |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 15/16/17 Pro · external ProRes 4K60 | SanDisk lists the Creator Phone SSD for 4K60 on these Pro/Pro Max generations; Apple specifies at least 220 MB/s sustained writes and maximum 4.5 W drive draw in its ProRes requirements. | The exact 1TB SDSSDE62C-1T00-G25 listing; exFAT; an explicit USB 3 cable rated 10 Gbit/s. SanDisk’s box list says “USB Cable” but does not state its data speed. |
| iPhone 16/17/18 Pro · external ProRes 4K120 | Apple’s current iOS 27 guide lists 4K120 external recording for these generations. Its March 2026 support page specifies at least 440 MB/s and maximum 4.5 W for the listed compatible 4K120 setup; the later guide does not add an SSD-specific certification for iPhone 18. | Do not assume the Creator Phone SSD is certified for this mode. Verify the exact drive, app, sustained write behavior and power draw; Apple says to reformat before each 4K120 session. |
| iPhone 17/18 Pro · ProRes RAW | Apple says apps such as Final Cut Camera can record RAW on these phones. | No RAW performance or drive/app combination was tested or certified by this guide. Verify the complete setup before relying on it. |
The phone’s charging cable is not the recording cable
USB-C names the connector, not its data speed. Apple says the USB-C charge cable included with an iPhone supports USB 2; its external ProRes guidance calls for a USB 3 cable rated at least 10 Gbit/s. A cable that charges the phone is not enough evidence for direct high-bandwidth recording.
The SanDisk Amazon box list includes a USB cable, but the checked product and listing pages do not publish that cable’s data rate. Check its packaging or marking. If the rating is unclear, the optional Cable Matters 107032 Thunderbolt 4 cable is a separately listed 1 m replacement; Apple documents Thunderbolt 4 cable backward compatibility with USB 3 and DisplayPort. It is not a required second purchase if your included cable already meets the requirement.
The correct cable still depends on the drive and the actual setup. The separate Mac monitor cable guide covers video output; this page is about external phone recording, not display connection.
The manufacturer-supported direct option
SanDisk’s current iPhone compatibility table specifically marks the Creator Phone SSD for ProRes 4K60 on iPhone 15, 16 and 17 Pro/Pro Max. That is the scope of this buying recommendation. The same table does not certify the drive for iPhone 18, ProRes 4K120 or RAW.
The exact Amazon.com 1TB model is SDSSDE62C-1T00-G25, ASIN B0DTBW1ND2. The item details list the SSD, magnetic ring, USB cable and guides in the box. SanDisk lists USB 3.2 Gen 2 and up to 1,000 MB/s reads / 950 MB/s writes. Those are advertised peak figures, not my sustained recording measurements.
Use 1TB as a capacity choice only if it covers your planned recording and offload intervals. Compare the live offer and selected capacity; availability and price can change. Do not substitute the similarly named Creator Phone Drive, which is a different product.
Reusing an SSD you already own
Samsung’s official support page confirms its T7, T7 Shield and T9 for 4K60 on 15 Pro/Pro Max in its stated 25 °C test conditions. It recommends the supplied cable. That is useful if you already own one; it is not a blanket 17/18 Pro, RAW or 4K120 certification.
For Mac transfers afterwards, the host’s USB mode is a separate limit. The Samsung T9 vs T7 Shield Mac guide explains why a higher drive label does not guarantee the same speed on your editing computer.
I have left Lexar Go out of the 17 Pro recommendation for now. The checked Amazon hub bundle also displayed a 15/16 and “Not 17” compatibility warning, while the manufacturer’s broader marketing is conditional. I have not verified a firmware or power configuration that resolves the difference.
When external power or a hub belongs in the rig
Apple’s March 2026 ProRes support article gives minimum external-drive requirements of 220 MB/s for 4K60 and 440 MB/s for 4K120, with a maximum 4.5 W power draw. The current iOS 27 guide expands the external 4K120 phone list to iPhone 18 Pro, but the older numeric requirements page predates that phone. Keep those model lists distinct and check Apple’s current instructions for the device you own.
A direct SSD connection uses the phone’s USB-C port. If your rig also needs wired audio or external power, check the complete hub’s actual high-speed data port, PD input and intended devices together. Apple’s general powered-hub support does not certify every hub-and-SSD combination for ProRes.
I have not verified a complete powered hub kit to recommend here. Do not buy one on the strength of a port count or a “100 W” label alone; confirm the data rate of the exact port your SSD will use.
The complete direct-recording package
For the selected manufacturer-listed 4K60 configuration: supported Pro iPhone, Creator Phone SSD, its included USB-C cable and a secure attachment appropriate to your phone or case. The phone powers the direct connection. Include a separate backup destination and any real mounting accessory you need; do not buy a hub merely because it appeared beside the SSD in a suggested bundle.
Before a shoot, check the format and recording destination, record a short clip at the intended mode, then play back and inspect that file. Rehearse a longer take before depending on the rig for an irreplaceable event. That is a recommended check for your equipment, not a test result from this article.
Offload to a second location before erasing or reformatting. The drive being visible in Files proves access, not success at the intended codec, frame rate or take length. Keep your only copy of a shoot out of any formatting workflow.
Formatting and higher recording modes
For direct ProRes, Apple specifies exFAT and excludes password-encrypted drives. Its general Files support covers more formats, so a drive opening in Files is not proof that its current format meets the recording requirements.
Apple calls for reformatting before each 4K120 ProRes session for optimal performance. Back up and verify the footage first. Reformatting erases the drive; this guide does not perform that action or suggest erasing your only copy.
The current iOS 27 camera guide includes 18 Pro external 4K120 and 17/18 Pro RAW in supported apps. The older March 2026 support article has an older explicit phone list. Use the current phone-mode documentation, then separately verify the exact SSD and app. Do not turn the device’s 950 MB/s marketing figure into a claim that I tested 4K120 or RAW.

Common questions
Can I use the charging cable that came with my iPhone for external ProRes?
Apple says the included USB-C charge cable supports USB 2. For external ProRes, its support article specifies a USB 3 cable rated for at least 10 Gbit/s.
Does this SanDisk SSD work with every ProRes mode on every Pro iPhone?
That is not established. SanDisk’s current table lists the Creator Phone SSD for 4K60 ProRes on iPhone 15, 16 and 17 Pro/Pro Max. It does not certify this drive for iPhone 18, 4K120 or RAW.
Is seeing an SSD in Files proof that it can record my selected mode?
No. Storage access is separate from the exact recording mode, sustained write rate, cable data speed, format and power requirements.
