Kindle Unlimited · Trial eligibility · Updated 8 October 2026

Before the free trial, check your reading list.

Check which Kindle Unlimited trial your account actually offers, then look for the books you want to read. The October 6–7 Prime event has ended; subscription promotions can have separate eligibility and end dates.

Your account offer

Verify the deal on your own Amazon account.

Amazon's October event announcement listed three months free with terms applying. Treat that as an event announcement, not a current offer guarantee. The signup screen shows your account's available trial and renewal terms.

01 / SIGNUP SCREEN

Read the offer terms

Check the number of free months, the date your paid plan begins, and the renewal amount displayed before you confirm. Offers can vary by account.

02 / PAYMENT

Note what renews

Amazon requires a valid payment method. Its help page says a free trial automatically converts to a monthly paid plan unless you manage or cancel it.

03 / PRICE

Use the current account price

Amazon's U.S. explainer lists $11.99 per month plus taxes. If that price applies after exactly three free months, keeping the plan for the remaining nine months of a year would total $107.91 plus tax.

Prime Reading vs Kindle Unlimited

Prime already comes with a reading option.

If you pay for Prime, check its rotating reading selection before adding a second subscription. Prime Reading is included with Prime; Kindle Unlimited is separate and has a larger eligible catalog.

ALREADY PAYING FOR PRIME

Start with Prime Reading

Amazon describes a rotating selection of thousands of books, magazines, comics, short reads and audiobooks at no additional cost to Prime members. Check whether the specific titles you want are included.

WANT A DEEPER CATALOG

Consider Kindle Unlimited

KU is a standalone subscription. Amazon says it covers eligible books, audiobooks, comics, manga and magazines, and allows borrowing up to 20 titles at once. The U.S. explainer lists $11.99 per month plus tax; confirm your account's offer and renewal price before joining.

ONLY A FEW SPECIFIC BOOKS

Compare the exact titles

Neither service includes every Kindle Store book. Search the books on your reading list and compare their individual prices before subscribing; the right choice depends on the titles you will actually read.

How the membership works

A large catalog, with a 20-title borrowing cap.

Kindle Unlimited covers selected items, not every Kindle Store purchase. Look for the Kindle Unlimited badge on the exact book, comic or magazine you want.

THE CATALOG

Check your actual reading list

Amazon describes a catalog of more than five million digital books, plus audiobooks, comics, manga and magazines. The catalog changes; not every author or title participates.

UP TO 20 TITLES

Return one to borrow another

You can borrow up to 20 titles at once with no due dates while your subscription is active. Amazon says magazine issues count toward that same limit.

ANY DEVICE

A Kindle is optional

Read on a Kindle e-reader or with the Kindle app on a phone, tablet, computer or the web. You do not need to buy a new Kindle to use the subscription.

Decide by the books, not the headline

When the offer may suit you.

A free trial can be useful if the titles you want are included and you have time to read them. It does not make every Kindle book free.

GOOD FIT

You found books you want to read

Open the Kindle Unlimited filter or check for the KU badge on specific titles first. Add those titles to your list, then see whether a few months of reading is worth the future monthly price.

LESS USEFUL

Your list is mostly outside the catalog

If the specific books you want are not included, compare their purchase prices with the membership fee. A large catalog does not mean every bestseller or every author's books are part of KU.

PRIME MEMBER?

Do not count it as an included benefit

Amazon describes Kindle Unlimited as a distinct membership from Prime. You can enroll without Prime; any trial or promotion has its own signup eligibility and terms.

Quick answers

Kindle Unlimited questions

Is Kindle Unlimited free with Prime?

No. Prime includes Prime Reading, its own rotating selection. Kindle Unlimited is separate. If you already have Prime, check Prime Reading first; you can also enroll in KU without Prime.

Does Kindle Unlimited include every Kindle book?

No. Look for the Kindle Unlimited badge on the title. The subscription catalog changes and is only a selection of the Kindle Store.

What happens when the free months end?

Amazon's help page says a free trial automatically converts to a monthly paid plan. Check the end date and current price during signup, then manage the subscription through Amazon if you do not want it to continue.
