New Kindle lineup · 1 October 2026
Kindle or Paperwhite? Start with how you read.
The 2026 refresh changes the shape of the choice. The basic Kindle stays compact; Paperwhite adds the warm light, waterproofing and longer battery claim. Signature Editions unlock the new button cover and charging dock.

The quick answer
Choose the smallest device you will actually enjoy reading on.
Kindle 16GB: the 6-inch take-anywhere option. Paperwhite 16GB: the more complete black-and-white reader if warm light, water resistance or a 7-inch page matters. Paperwhite Signature: for auto brightness, 32GB and the new button cover or dock. Colorsoft: for books where color is part of the reading experience.
Four clear roles

The new 6-inch Kindle is the one to carry
Amazon says the 16GB model opens books 30% faster than the previous release and lasts up to six weeks on a charge. The redesigned front sits flush with the display. An aluminum-back, 32GB version offers the same compact 6-inch format with a different finish and more local storage.
The reason to pick either is size. For text-only novels on a commute or in a small bag, a 6-inch screen is easier to carry than the 7-inch options. If you want a warm light or Amazon's published waterproofing claim, move to Paperwhite; the announcement assigns those features to Paperwhite, not the basic model.
Paperwhite vs Paperwhite Signature Edition
The standard 2026 Paperwhite gives you the 7-inch monochrome display, adjustable warm light, waterproof design, 16GB and Amazon's up-to-12-week battery claim. For long-form black-and-white reading, that is the useful feature jump from the smaller Kindle.
The Signature Edition adds a 32GB configuration, aluminum rear housing, automatic front-light adjustment, pogo-pin charging with the separately sold dock, and double-tap page turning. It is also one of only two 2026 models Amazon says work with the new magnetic Page-Turn Cover. Choose it because you want those specific extras; the announcement does not establish that its text looks sharper than the regular Paperwhite.
Colorsoft is a different reading choice
The new 7-inch Colorsoft is for content where color adds something: covers, travel guides, comics, diagrams and highlighted passages. Amazon says the regular model has 16GB and up to eight weeks of battery life. Its 32GB Signature Edition adds the aluminum housing, auto-adjusting light, double-tap page turning and pogo-pin dock support.
If you mostly read monochrome novels, Paperwhite's warm-light, waterproof, longer-battery package is the simpler comparison. Do not assume a color screen improves ordinary black-and-white text without seeing the screens yourself; I have not compared them in person.
Already have a 2024 Paperwhite?
The 2024 Paperwhite already brought a 7-inch display, warm light, waterproofing and an up-to-12-week battery claim. The 2026 announcement emphasizes a thinner, lighter body, flush front and new Signature accessories. That makes an upgrade most persuasive if you specifically want the new physical design, the Signature button cover, dock or double-tap control—not merely because the release year changed.
Amazon says the separate Kindle Click remote also works with Kindle models released in 2024 or later. If page turning at a distance is the only feature you want, that may be a more targeted purchase than replacing a working reader. Check the compatibility guide before ordering.
What I would buy for each reader
- Mostly novels, always on the move: start with the 6-inch Kindle 16GB.
- Reading at night or near water: start with the regular Paperwhite.
- Want physical page-turn buttons on the case: choose a 2026 Paperwhite Signature or Colorsoft Signature and the separately sold cover.
- Comics, illustrated books or color highlights: compare Colorsoft in person with the monochrome Paperwhite.
- Already happy with a 2024 Paperwhite: hold off until one of the new controls solves an actual problem.

How much do the new Kindles cost in the U.S.?
Amazon announced starting prices of $149.99 for the standard Kindle, $199.99 for Paperwhite and $289.99 for Colorsoft on 1 October 2026. Aluminum and Signature models cost more. These are launch prices, not current offers; check the selected configuration and live checkout total.
Is the 2026 basic Kindle waterproof?
Amazon's launch announcement explicitly calls the new Paperwhite waterproof. It does not make that claim for the basic Kindle, so choose Paperwhite if water resistance is a requirement.
Does the Page-Turn Cover fit a 2024 Paperwhite?
Amazon lists the new button cover for the 2026 Paperwhite Signature and 2026 Colorsoft Signature Editions. It does not list the 2024 Paperwhite as compatible.
Does the Kindle Click require a 2026 Kindle?
No. Amazon says its Bluetooth remote works with the new models and Kindle devices released in 2024 or later.
