MacBook size and accessories
The new MacBook Pro is smaller. Will your old sleeve fit?
Compare the new PROLED MacBook Pro dimensions and weight with Liquid Retina models, then check what those changes mean for your sleeve or snap-on case.

A smaller body needs a fresh fit check
The 14-inch PROLED MacBook Pro is 220 g lighter than the earlier 14-inch M5 Pro or M5 Max model. The new 16-inch saves 310–320 g. Both are thinner and shallower, so check the actual chassis rather than assuming an old case fits because its listing says “M5” or “14-inch”.
Researched from Apple’s published specifications, checked 29 October 2026. I have not used the new models. Amazon links are affiliate links.

| Model | Width | Depth | Thickness | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14-inch PROLED · M5 Pro / Max | 310.8 mm | 216.3 mm | 15.0 mm | 1.38 / 1.40 kg |
| 14-inch Liquid Retina · M5 Pro / Max | 312.6 mm | 221.2 mm | 15.5 mm | 1.60 / 1.62 kg |
| 14-inch Liquid Retina · M6 | 312.6 mm | 221.2 mm | 15.5 mm | 1.55 kg |
| 16-inch PROLED · M5 Pro / Max | 355.5 mm | 244.2 mm | 16.0 mm | 1.82 / 1.84 kg |
| 16-inch Liquid Retina · M5 Pro / Max | 355.7 mm | 248.1 mm | 16.8 mm | 2.14 / 2.15 kg |
Which size belongs in your bag?
The 14-inch PROLED is 1.8 mm narrower, 4.9 mm shallower and 0.5 mm thinner than the earlier Liquid Retina body. The 16-inch barely changes in width, but loses 3.9 mm of depth and 0.8 mm of thickness. The weight savings are easier to picture: 220 g for the 14-inch, and 320 g with M5 Pro or 310 g with M5 Max for the 16-inch.
Moving from the new 14-inch to the new 16-inch adds 440 g at either chip tier, before your charger and accessories. You get a 16.3-inch display instead of 14.2 inches. If you carry it daily but usually work on an external screen, that is a useful tradeoff to settle before choosing Pro versus Max.
Will your old sleeve fit?
A soft sleeve has some tolerance. Compare its usable internal width, depth and thickness with the table, allowing for the padding, zip opening and any case you leave on the laptop. External bag dimensions do not tell you how much space is inside. A smaller laptop may go into an existing sleeve, but a formerly snug sleeve could now leave more movement.
If you already own a sleeve, try the actual computer before buying a replacement. If you are ordering ahead, look for published internal measurements and a return policy rather than trusting a screen-size label.
Snap-on shells need the exact generation
A rigid shell relies on the corners, clips, hinge clearance and port openings. Being slightly smaller does not establish compatibility. Require the accessory maker to name the PROLED generation and the correct size; “MacBook Pro M5 Pro” is ambiguous because Apple sells that chip with both display families.
Treat fitted skins, keyboard covers and docks that attach directly to the side the same way: check the maker’s specific model list. The M6 versus PROLED buying guide explains the overlapping names before you order the computer itself.
The familiar ports are still here
Both PROLED sizes retain MagSafe 3, Thunderbolt 5, HDMI, SDXC and a headphone jack. Familiar port names do not establish that an old shell’s cutouts line up, so check the accessory maker’s exact generation list.
Include your charger and cable when comparing the weight you will carry. Check the box contents for your country before buying a second adapter, then decide whether you need a separate charger for travel or can use the one supplied with the computer.
Two more things to check before buying
The new screen changes daily use as well as size. Read the touchscreen and fingerprints guide and the standard versus nano-texture comparison if you are choosing the display finish.
The glowing Apple logo has now been shown in launch hands-ons. Numerama also reports that you can switch it off; see the logo lighting update.
